About · Downing Designs

One craftsman.
Every stage.
No substitutes.

I'm the guy who answers the phone. Not an assistant. Not a sales rep. Me. Jeff. The actual human being who will fabricate your countertop, polish your edge, load it into my truck, drive it to your home, and help you lift it into place.

Jeff Downing founder of Downing Designs Tampa Florida

That's either exactly what you're looking for, or this is the wrong website. Either way, now you know.

I've been doing this since 2000, which means I've seen every trend come and go — the granites, the quartzites, the concrete, the waterfall edges, the everything-white-everything. I watched each wave crest and recede. I kept making glass.

Not because I'm stubborn. Because glass — kiln-formed, heat-strengthened, hand-textured, LED-illuminated glass — does something no other surface on earth can do. It makes a room feel like it's alive. That's not a feature. That's a philosophy.

I have a chemistry degree from the University of Pittsburgh. I understand materials at a molecular level — how glass behaves under heat, how colorants bond during firing, how a surface that looks purely artistic is also an engineering solution. I think about load-bearing dynamics, bracket placement, cantilever tolerances, and structural integrity the same way I think about color, texture, and light. They are not separate conversations. They never were.

I also have a fine arts background. Which means I've been living at the intersection of science and beauty for over four decades, and I am not remotely tired of it.

My kilns are running. My waterjet is cutting at 60,000 psi. My edge polisher produces a finish you will not find anywhere else on this planet. I'm not exaggerating. I've looked.

You reach out. I answer. Friday…Saturday…Sunday…or Thursday. We talk like human beings. From that conversation, I pencil sketch dimensions and text you diagrams. Those sketches become a scaled drawing embedded in your quote. You have exactly three choices: all of it, some of it, or none of it. No pressure. No hustle.

Once you say go — and plenty of people do — we begin with a template and the interactive glass texture design process. We work together to dial in your texture, your color, your edge profile, your LED color temperature. This isn't me disappearing into a workshop and emerging six weeks later with a surprise. This is an interactive collaboration, from concept to installation.

Then I make the glass. By hand. In my 10,000 square foot fabrication studio in Ybor City, Tampa. We fire the glass to heat-strengthened strength, cut it, polish it to a standard that frankly embarrasses most of what passes for "premium" in this industry, and either drive it to you personally or crate it in fully insured custom packaging and ship it anywhere in the world.

If the project warrants it — and most do — I fly there. We gather some strong individuals. We lift it into place together. Then we open a bottle of wine, set it on your beautiful new surface, and I take photographs. The "Ambiance Machine" Activation. We don't just install glass; we activate an atmosphere.

That's the whole process. Start to a delicious finish, you deal with one person. The person who made it.

What we make.

Kiln-formed glass bar tops. Glass countertops. Glass sinks. Glass café tables — imagine alternating cobalt and white, or aqua and ivory, along a restaurant terrace. We also make glass stair treads, architectural panels, lava stone enameled surfaces, and custom concrete stair treads. If it involves light, surface, and a room that needs to feel like something, we've probably already done it.

We serve luxury residential clients, high-end hospitality, the Cutest Boutique Brewery and Cafe, and the occasional private island. No, that's not a metaphor. We've also done superyachts.

You should know exactly who is making your surface, exactly how they make it, and exactly what happens if something isn't right. With me, the answer to all three is: Jeff. Jeff makes it. Jeff will fix it.

I've been building this studio for 25 years because I believe that the finest surfaces in the world should come with the finest level of personal accountability. Not a warranty card. A person. That person is me.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes a custom glass countertop different from standard materials?

Glass countertops combine artistic beauty with functional performance. Unlike stone or wood, glass interacts with light, creating reflections and depth that bring a unique visual element to a space. Because each piece is fabricated specifically for the project, the final result is a highly customized surface designed to match both the architecture and the homeowner's style.

What is a floating glass vanity and how does it work?

A floating glass vanity is a sleek, modern bathroom surface that appears to "float" above the floor, creating an open and airy feel. The integrated glass sink is fabricated as part of the same piece, eliminating seams and creating a smooth, continuous surface that is easy to clean and maintain.

How strong are glass bar tops and countertops?

Custom glass countertops and bar tops are fabricated from thick architectural glass engineered for strength and safety. When properly installed, they easily withstand everyday use and light impacts. With polished edges and professional fabrication, glass surfaces are extremely durable.

Can glass countertops be customized in size, shape, or texture?

Yes. Every glass surface is custom fabricated to match the exact requirements of your space. Designs can include curved, rectangular, or completely custom shapes, along with textured surfaces, decorative finishes, or integrated sinks.

Do you install projects outside of Tampa, Florida?

Yes. While based in Tampa, projects are designed, fabricated, and installed throughout the US and Florida. Installations have included Naples, Jupiter, Miami, Sarasota, West Palm Beach, and other areas across the state.

Why choose Downing Designs for a custom glass installation?

Downing Designs combines decades of hands-on experience with a deep understanding of architectural glass fabrication and installation. Many concepts used in client projects were first tested and refined in Jeff Downing's own home. Every installation reflects precision craftsmanship and surfaces built to perform beautifully in real-world environments.

Can glass countertops be repaired if damaged?

In most cases, glass countertops are extremely durable and resistant to everyday wear. We offer a service to remove minor surface scratches or edge dings. No foreign manufacturer offers such a service. Significant damage is uncommon due to the strength of heat-strengthened architectural glass.

What is the cost range for custom glass installations?

The cost varies depending on size, thickness, edge finishing, and installation complexity. Pricing is determined after reviewing design and measurements. See our Cost of Glass Countertops guide.

How long does a custom glass project take?

Most projects take 3–8 weeks from design consultation through installation. We also offer in-stock glass bar tops that satisfy immediate demands.
