Pricing & Estimates 7 questions

What does a custom glass countertop cost in Florida in 2026?

Entry-level custom glass runs $200–$300 per sq ft, mid-range $300–$400, and high-end illuminated or outdoor glass $500–$1,000+. Thickness is the single biggest driver of where a project lands in that range.

Why do glass countertop prices vary by Florida region?

Naples and Sarasota projects typically start at $400+ per sq ft due to large outdoor kitchens and swim-up bars. Boca Raton, West Palm Beach, and Ft. Lauderdale start around $450+ from tighter condo logistics. Tampa Bay starts around $350+, reflecting a mix of indoor and transitional spaces.

What actually drives the cost of a glass countertop beyond square footage?

Glass thickness, texture intricacy, edge-polish quality, LED integration, and whether the piece is US-made (avoiding a 35% import tariff and cutting lead time) all move the price. Curved cuts and integrated sinks add fabrication time as well.

Is a glass kitchen countertop worth the money?

For a client who wants ambiance control — not just a work surface — yes. A glass countertop cleans with Windex, never needs resealing, and doubles as a lighting fixture that shifts mood from breakfast bar to evening entertaining.

How much do Glazed Lava Stone countertops cost compared to glass?

Glazed Lava Stone starts around $400 per sq ft depending on color and finish. Unlike glass, it isn't LED-illuminated, so the two materials solve different design problems rather than compete on price alone.

Do static and flowing hand-textured glass patterns cost the same?

Yes — static and flowing hand-textured designs are priced identically. That's why more than 99% of Downing Designs clients choose a flowing texture: there's no cost reason not to.

Does a wider bar top cost more?

Yes. 20 inches wide by 1.5 inches thick is the standard, cost-efficient width — enough for a dinner plate, a wine glass, and side dishes without crowding. Going to 24 inches or wider adds material cost without a functional gain for most home bars.

Thickness & Weight 5 questions

What is the typical thickness of a glass countertop?

1.5 inches is standard, weighing approximately 21 lbs per square foot. Over 95% of Downing Designs countertops are fabricated at this thickness.

Why does thicker glass cost so much more?

Annealing time increases exponentially with thickness, not linearly. A 1.5 inch countertop anneals in about 10 hours; a 4 inch piece needs 14+ days in the kiln. That kiln time is what drives the price jump on thicker glass.

What thickness options are available for glass countertops?

Standard options run 3/4 inch, 1 inch, and 1.5 inches, with custom thickness up to 3+ inches available for long spans. Glass table tops are often specified at 1 inch to suit minimalist bases.

Can 1.5 inch glass span a long bar top without extra supports?

Yes — 1.5 inch glass is structurally strong enough to span over 120 inches between just two supports, which is why most Downing Designs high bars use only two brackets instead of a forest of them underneath.

Does condo installation limit how thick a glass countertop can be?

Often, yes. Condo projects in Miami, Boca Raton, and Naples need to account for elevator height and weight limits, which can steer the specification toward standard 1.5 inch glass over a heavier custom thickness.

LED Lighting & Color 6 questions

What LED lighting options exist for a glass countertop?

Three core techniques: edge lighting (strips along the rear or side edges), under-panel lighting (even wash from beneath), and full RGB systems tunable to over 8 million colors from a phone app.

What is the difference between edge lighting and under-lighting on textured glass?

Edge lighting sends beams laterally across the texture, deepening the shadow-casting effect of a hand-carved surface. Under-panel lighting washes evenly from below, softening texture — better suited to subtler patterns like the Downing Designs Ice texture.

Why does Downing Designs use low-iron glass with LED lighting?

Standard clear glass has a green tint that distorts LED color rendering, especially in ambers and deep blues. Low-iron glass is optically clear, so the color programmed into the LED system is the color guests actually see — the same optical-path-length principle behind why layered glass reads deeper in person than in any photo. See Depth You Can't Photograph for the full physics.

What overhead lighting do you recommend for a glass countertop?

SORAA 4000K dimmable bulbs — the same lighting technology used by museums to illuminate artwork. They deliver sharp beam edges and exceptional color rendering rather than the diffuse wash of standard recessed LEDs.

Can the LED lighting under a glass countertop change color for different moods?

Yes, RGB systems are fully app-controlled. Jeff Downing runs his own home countertops on timers — cool white at 6am for the coffee machine, shifting through the day, off at midnight.

What colors can back-painted glass be?

Any color matched from Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams. Metallic silver is the single most-requested back-paint color, chosen for how it deepens the visible texture from above.

Durability & Materials 8 questions

Are glass countertops actually durable?

Yes — the non-porous surface has no microscopic pathway for stains or bacteria to penetrate, which is why repeat commercial bar-top orders are common. Nobody re-orders a surface that failed the first time.

How does glass compare to quartz for staining?

Quartz is not stain-proof — coffee, wine, and chemical spills can mark it, hot pans can scorch it, and permanent marker leaves lasting ink marks. Glass resists all of the above without sealing.

How does glass compare to marble?

Marble etches when acidic substances — vinegar, citrus, wine, tomato sauce — react with the calcium carbonate in the stone, leaving dull spots. Glass has no comparable failure mode and needs no periodic resealing.

Does a glass countertop need to be sealed?

No — never. Glass is non-porous by nature, so there's no sealing cycle to maintain, unlike quartz or marble.

Is glass safe for outdoor installation in Florida?

Yes. Glass is unaffected by salt air or humidity. Outdoor installs use IP-68 rated adhesives, stainless-steel supports, and outdoor-rated LED wiring and pool-safe lighting systems.

What temperature is the glass fired at?

Kilns reach over 1,400°F. The glass becomes viscous and flows over a hand-carved textured sand bed, then anneals for several days before cutting, polishing, and LED integration.

Are glass countertops eco-friendly?

Yes — the glass used is roughly 25–30% recycled content, and the finished piece is fully recyclable at end of life.

What is the difference between recycled glass (Vetrazzo) and solid glass countertops?

Vetrazzo-style recycled glass is bound with cement and polymer, and cannot be LED-illuminated. Downing Designs countertops are 100% solid, non-porous glass — a different material with a different set of design possibilities.

Design, Texture & Edge 4 questions

How are Downing Designs glass textures made?

Each texture is hand-carved into a sand bed to match a specific client's space, synced to how people naturally move through the room before the glass is ever fired.

What edge profiles are available on a custom glass bar top?

Polished, beveled, ogee, scalloped, and custom geometric cuts using waterjet technology, each finished with hand-polishing to optical clarity.

Why hand-polished edges instead of CNC-machined edges?

CNC machines leave visible line marks — liney but shiney. Hand-polishing takes 11 steps to reach true optical clarity, and rounded-over edges resist chipping in a way sharp 45-degree bevels don't.

Is every Downing Designs countertop texture unique?

Yes — because each texture is hand-carved per project, no two countertops are identical, even when clients request a similar style.

Installation & Service Area 4 questions

Who installs Downing Designs countertops?

Jeff Downing personally delivers and installs every piece, nationwide — no third-party crews and no handoff between the person who built it and the person who sets it.

What areas of Florida does Downing Designs serve?

Tampa, St. Petersburg, Sarasota, Ft. Myers, Naples, Ft. Lauderdale, Miami, Boca Raton, Jupiter, and West Palm Beach, with installations shipped coast-to-coast beyond Florida.

How fast can a glass countertop ship?

In-stock designs can ship in as little as 3 days. Custom hand-textured pieces take longer, scheduled around kiln queue and annealing time for the specified thickness.

What is the largest size Downing Designs can fabricate as one seamless piece?

Up to 130 inches in a single piece — no seam across a kitchen island, no grout line through a bathroom vanity.
