Project Showcase · Key Largo, Florida

Some rooms announce themselves. This one waits. Dark cabinetry, layered surfaces, orchids on every counter — the kind of residence where the design has already done the work before a single guest arrives. The only question left was what sits on the bar. The answer: 126 inches of illuminated kiln-formed glass, fabricated in Tampa, installed at one of South Florida's most exclusive private clubs.

Project Summary

This custom glass bar top and countertop installation was designed and fabricated by Downing Designs, Tampa, FL for a luxury home at Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Florida — one of the most exclusive private residential clubs in the United States. Orchids planted everywhere. The kind of property where the glass has to be the best thing in the room, and the room is already exceptional.

The installation was completed in partnership with CM Glass, Miami as installation partner. The result is a 126-inch illuminated glass high bar with the Ambiance Machine™ RGB LED system and a lower 26-inch × 85-inch glass countertop with integrated top-mount sink — both in 1.5-inch low-iron kiln-formed glass with the hand-carved Suave wave texture.

Both surfaces are back-painted opaque metallic silver — a permanent two-part catalyzed urethane finish that eliminates substrate visibility, conceals the LED mounting, and creates a seamless illuminated surface when the Ambiance Machine™ is active.

The design challenge: textures that celebrate and sync

Both surfaces — the high bar and the lower countertop — use the hand-carved Suave wave texture, designed so the flow of the pattern reads between them as part of the same composition. The bar top is the elevated statement piece. The lower countertop is the worksurface. But the texture connects them, so the eye reads the whole installation as a unified field rather than two separate objects.

The Ambiance Machine™ systems on each surface are independently controlled — allowing the lower countertop sink area to be lit at a different intensity than the high bar, which is critical when the high bar LED is set to 100% and the sink area needs to stay readable as a functional surface. A small secondary LED strip under the top-mounted sink front edge — set to approximately 10% of the rear LED intensity — balances the composition exactly.

Partner Spotlight: CM Glass, Miami

CM Glass is Downing Designs' installation partner for South Florida projects where on-the-ground precision matters as much as what's coming off the truck. For a commission at a property like Ocean Reef Club — where access logistics, installation windows, and client expectations are exacting — a trusted regional partner is the difference between a flawless result and a compromised one.

Fabrication, design, and quality control remain entirely in-house at the Downing Designs studio in Tampa. Every panel arrives installation-ready. CM Glass handles the final placement with the same standard the glass was built to.

Why back-paint glass bar tops with metallic silver?

Back-painting serves two purposes simultaneously. It conceals whatever is behind or beneath the glass — cabinet contents, LED mounting hardware, substrate imperfections — eliminating all visual distractions from the illuminated surface above. And it creates a reflective layer that dramatically amplifies the LED output, bouncing light back through the glass and intensifying the glow from within.

The metallic silver formula used at Downing Designs is a permanent two-part catalyzed urethane — not a spray paint, not a vinyl film. It bonds chemically to the glass and will not peel, crack, or separate under the heat generated by the LED system over years of continuous use.
