Custom L-shaped textured glass bar top designed and installed in St Petersburg Florida by Downing Designs.

This custom L-Shaped Glass Bar Top installation was designed and fabricated by Downing Designs for a modern private residence in St Petersburg, Florida.

Our 1.5” thick low-iron textured glass bar top was engineered to sit directly on the knee wall and secured with through-bolted low-profile stainless caps. The bar measures 130″ x 120″ with a 20″ depth and a full 1.5″ glass thickness.

The installation creates a sleek architectural look that preserves the open floor plan while making the bar appear to float — especially in the evening when illuminated. This is a signature approach of our Ambiance Machine™ design process.

If glass bar tops are choreography, this installation is a very capable dance partner. The flow of the texture was designed to guide movement from the entry into the open-plan kitchen and living area.

This textured glass bar top is one of my favorites. It delivers great theater. Integrated lighting and sculpted glass textures create a natural gathering point and a central magnet for guests.

Design Challenge

The design challenge was connecting the carved texture across both sections as the bar turns the L-shaped corner.

To accomplish this, Downing Designs creates the first glass slab and then places both pieces into the kiln in sequence so the texture pattern flows continuously across the seam.

The Solution

The bar top was first drawn in scale to determine the directional flow of the texture through the room.

The kiln bed was carved to create the wave pattern and the 1.5” low-iron glass was kiln-formed. After annealing, the glass was cut to dimension, hand-polished, and fitted with our precision-fabricated Ambiance Machine™ lighting system.

The finished installation becomes the gravitational center of the home — hosting cocktail parties, dinner service, and everyday workspace.

Design Idea

The low-profile caps were selected instead of brackets because the client wanted a completely clean underside. We worked closely with the bar base fabricator to ensure the wood structure was engineered to remain absolutely rigid.

Through our proprietary Ambiance Machine™ design process, Jeff Downing engineers the feeling first — then designs the form and light to create a specific atmospheric result.

Feel it. Form it. Light it.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes Downing Designs textured glass unique?

Downing Designs sequences textures across multiple glass panels so the carved pattern flows continuously across seams, creating the appearance of a single sculpted piece of glass.

How are glass bar tops secured to a wood base?

Low-profile stainless caps secure the glass through precision drilled holes. This creates a minimalist support system while keeping the glass bar top extremely stable.

How strong must the wood base be?

The supporting base must be extremely rigid and built as a single structural unit using strong joinery, long fasteners, and double top plates to prevent flexing over time.
