Two companies (Pyrolave from France and Rainieri from Italy) lead the pack in their ability to quarry lava stone from their local volcanic areas: Auvergne in France and Mount Etna in Sicily. The quarried lava stone is prepared in a multi-stage process, coated with the enamel glaze and kiln fired at over 1500 degrees F.
Lava Stone is:
Inert to heat, since that was its genesis. No other stone offers such thermal protection. Hot pans can be placed upon the surface without causing any issues.
Non-Porous, and will not stain. It can withstand all common household cleaners and food acids and requires no maintenance or sealers
UV inert. It simply will not fade. It is inorganic. Many historic French road signs were made of this material and have been successfully deployed for centuries.
It is a perfect outdoor table or countertop material…especially in lighter colors that reflect vs absorb sunlight.

Lava stone is priced at around $250-$350 per sq ft. While this is expensive, we offer a solution. We contend that you do not need a lot of color to make an artistic design statement. Just as an art gallery uses white walls to make the small paintings POP, so too can you in your design schema. Downing Designs offers White Glass Countertops and these are the perfect material to juxtapose against your Lava Stone countertops. Varying the composition is a fun exercise, can save you money and produce a clean, modern kitchen look. White Glass is about ½ the cost of Lava Stone countertops.

Templating is critical to make sure we get the overhangs, sink cutouts, faucet holes, angles, etc. correct. A good seam plan is also important. This is where a professional well-versed in kitchen design and implementation is invaluable. Be prepared to answer many questions concerning the ultimate layout. Once templated, you must freeze any added work that changes the layout.
